PHUKET: The Sydictive Element Electronic Dance Music Festival appeared
to be running out of time today with Patong showing little enthusiasm
for hosting the event - unless it's free.Patong Deputy Mayor Chairat Sukban said yesterday that the organisers would need signed approval from the Minister of the Interior or the Phuket Governor for a private event.
''Even then we wouldn't allow it to be held on the beach because all our beach events have traditionally been free,'' he said.
''It would be something new for a private event to be held on the public beach and for people to be asked to pay for it.''
His sentiments were echoed by Suchart Hirankanokkul, President of the Thai Hotels Association (Southern Chapter) and owner of the beachfront Phuket Graceland Resort and Spa.
''How would our guests sleep through such an event?'' he said. ''How can they possibly close off any public beach on Phuket for a private event?
''It should not happen anytime, anywhere on Phuket.''
Festival organisers had been hoping to cordon off a stretch of beach opposite the large Patong resort to check the tickets of fans who have paid 2000 baht and more to attend the event.
With five days to go, the future of the festival, planned originally for December 30 and December 31 at Phuket's family-oriented Surin beach, remains in limbo.
Brochures promoting the event, which has been advertising the appearance of some top-line international performers, were being handed out in a Phuket shopping mall and around Soi Bangla in Patong last night.
However, the sydictiveelement.com online site could not be accessed on Christmas morning.
The Sydictive Element Facebook page listed Patong as the location for the event on the Home page but on clicking through to INFO, puzzled readers would have found it still listed for Surin beach.
Talks have been held between Patong Mayor Pian Keesin and Sydictive Element CEO Jirat ''Champ'' Petnunthawong but there has been no formal announcement about the event.
Patong municipality traditionally holds a free New Year event. At Karon beach, south of Patong, the municipality is promoting a free electronic dance music festival for December 30 and December 31.
